Investigations into the impacts of mycotoxins on human and animal health, as well as their economic consequences
Our project will undertake in-depth investigations to assess the far-reaching impacts of mycotoxin contamination on human and animal health, as well as the associated economic consequences for African communities.
About the project
Starting point
We will conduct comprehensive studies to evaluate the prevalence and severity of mycotoxin-related health issues, such as liver damage, immune system impairment, and growth retardation in children. The team will also examine the effects of mycotoxin exposure on livestock and poultry productivity, leading to quantification of productivity losses and economic impacts.
Support from local communities
This research will involve close collaboration with local healthcare providers, veterinarians, and agricultural extension officers to gather data and insights from the field. Community engagement will be crucial to understanding the real-world challenges faced by people and businesses affected by mycotoxin contamination.
End result
The findings from these investigations will provide the evidence needed to raise awareness, inform policymaking, and guide the development of targeted interventions to mitigate the public health and economic burdens of mycotoxins in Africa.
