IRN SUDMYCOTOX
International research group on occurrence and impact of mycotoxins in Africa
Our mission is to ensure food safety and security across Africa
SUDMYCOTOX project is a vast network comprising 41 members from 17 research teams across 12 countries (including France). Its objective is to unite research efforts and facilitate regional and sub-regional scientific cooperation for the analysis and risk assessment of mycotoxin presence in the human and animal food chains. This network aims to foster the development of excellent research initiatives in Africa.
We aim to raise awareness, generate reliable data, and develop effective strategies to mitigate the negative impacts of mycotoxins on food security, public health, and economic development across the continent.
How do we work?
Technology & Innovation
Partnering with Local Communities
Cutting-edge technology and innovative approaches are at the heart of the SUDMYCOTOX network's work. The project leverages advanced analytical techniques, to develop rapid, cost-effective mycotoxin detection tools. Additionally, the network explores the use of biocontrol agents, improved storage methods, and digital traceability systems to prevent and mitigate mycotoxin contamination. By combining scientific expertise with technological innovation, the network aims to deliver practical, scalable solutions for African communities.
The SUDMYCOTOX network is financed by the Institut de Recherche pour le Développement (IRD), a French public research institute dedicated to international development. The IRD plays a crucial role in supporting this network by providing funding, technical expertise, and access to its extensive global research infrastructure. This partnership enables the project to conduct high-quality, impactful research that addresses the mycotoxin challenge in Africa.
The SUDMYCOTOX network operates through a collaborative, multi-disciplinary approach. Researchers from diverse fields, including agriculture, food science, public health, and economics, work together to generate comprehensive insights and practical solutions. Regular meetings, joint research projects, and knowledge-sharing activities foster strong coordination and synergy among the network members.
Finance & Investing
Collaboration with local stakeholders, including farmers, food processors, and community organizations, is essential to the SUDMYCOTOX network's approach. The project actively engages with these communities to understand their needs, challenges, and existing practices. This input shapes the design and implementation of the network's research, capacity-building, and outreach activities, ensuring that the solutions developed are tailored to the local context and effectively address the concerns of the people they are intended to serve.
